School Games Mark 19/20 Criteria Amend
Following some ongoing discussions with Sport England there has been a slight amend to one of the School Games Mark Criterion for 2019/20 which will only affect Primary Schools. The amended criterion is:
- Primary Schools Only – Have a method of tracking provision for physical activity across the school for example through the www.activeschoolplanner.org
The use of the Active School Planner is still actively encouraged as this provides excellent national insight. The change reflects that some schools are using alternative tools to track their 30 active minute physical activity provision. If your schools are using alternative systems to the Active School Planner you will need to be confident it is appropriate to ensure the school is making steps to increase physical activity, and you will still need to observe their self-review and plan as part of silver and gold applications. Please do have a look at this for Silver and Gold criteria in the guidance document.
Whilst we acknowledge that an amend at any time in the year is not great, we hope that the timing of this change gives you enough time to ensure that you and your schools are aware both for tracking purposes and validation. We will also be making all registered schools aware via the School Games Update that they receive.

The course looks at the fundamental biochemistry of play and how we can use this knowledge to help children emotionally reset, build resilience and promote positive mental health. It shows how positive play can have the most profound effect on a child’s emotional wellbeing and can help children to overcome emotional obstacles and develop confidence and self esteem. The course also demonstrates how we can use play to help develop secure attachments with the children in our care especially if those children are struggling with attachments outside of our setting. The course is intensely thought provoking, combining up to date neuroscience and biochemistry with therapeutic play techniques to create a unique toolkit for helping not just vulnerable children but all children in our care. Learners will also take part in a wealth of practical activities designed to help children experience the therapeutic benefits of play and might just experience some of those benefits themselves.
This course meets the following:
•Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing
•EYFS areas of learning and development – personal, social and emotional development, physical development, communication and language
•Understanding the world, expressive arts and design
•Characteristics of effective learning – playing and exploring, active learning, creating and thinking critically
•Play types – fantasy play, socio dramatic play, imaginative play, role play, creative play, dramatic play, communication play, locomotor play, deep play
