119 of our most talented young athletes have been awarded funding through the 2011/12 Leicester-Shire & Rutland GO GOLD Talented Athlete Fund.
Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS), supported by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council and Rutland County Council, are pleased to support talented young athletes through the GO GOLD Talented Athlete Fund.
119 successful athletes were invited to attend one of two presentation evenings on Tuesday 28th January or Thursday 6th February, hosted by the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Rosita Page, at County Hall. The athletes were awarded with awards of £300, £500, £750 or £1,000, as part of Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport’s (LRS), GO GOLD Talented Athlete Fund.
The aim of GO GOLD is to support talented young athletes who are currently performing at regional standard or above in their sport, including those athletes who are being recognised by their National Governing Bodies as being our future Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth athletes and potential medal winners.
Athletes from all 9 districts across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland have been awarded Go Gold Funding and had representatives on each night. All athletes also receive free gym and swim access from their district leisure provider.
Blaby – 24 – supported with free leisure facility access to Everyone Active (Enderby LC)
Charnwood – 20 – Fusion Lifestyle (Loughborough LC and Soar Valley LC)
Harborough – 21 – Harborough Leisure Trust (Harborough LC and Lutterworth LC)
Hinckley & Bosworth – 10 – Everyone Active (Hinckley LC)
Melton – 5 – Everyone Active (Waterfield LC)
North West Leicestershire – 5 – North West Leicestershire District Council (Hermitage LC)
Oadby & Wigston – 10 – Harpers Health and Fitness (Parklands LC, Oadby Pool and Wigston Pool)
Rutland – 6 – Catmose Sport (Catmose Sports Centre)
Leicester City – 17 – City Council (City owned leisure facilities)
The Chairman’s Trophy, which recognises the greatest improvement of an athlete over a 12 month period, was awarded at the final presentation evening. The award went to Alex Harris from Blaby for the improvement he has demonstrated in Shooting. Panagiotis Mamuneas, a Weightlifter from Oadby & Wigston, was named as the runner up.
The Athletes were awarded their grants by Daniel West, Paralympic Athlete and IPC World Championship Silver Medallist F34 Shot Put and the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council Rosita Page.
