Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Spring Championships is nearly here…

The Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Spring Championships will be taking place at Loughborough University’s world-class sporting facilities, on Thursday 3rd April.

After winning the ‘National LOC Leading the Way’ Award for the management and delivery of an exceptionally high-quality 2012/13 Sainsbury’s School Games programme, the Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games are well underway for the 2013/14 academic year. Hundreds of pupils from schools right across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland have already taken part in a number of competitive school sport events, such as Basketball, Badminton and Indoor Cricket.

The event, which will take place between 9:30am and 3:30pm, is expected to feature over 1,000 athletes and spectators and will see young people aged 11-18 years competing in a series of 9 different sports, including disability specific competitions, which include; Boccia, Dodgeball, Inclusive Zone Basketball, Netball, Indoor Rowing, Sitting Volleyball, Swimming, Trampolining and Volleyball.

Schools from the following ten partnership areas will be taking part:
Blaby & Harborough
North Charnwood
South Charnwood
Hinckley & Bosworth
East Leicester
West Leicester
Melton
North West Leicestershire
Oadby & Wigston
Rutland

The Championships will be officially opened by the Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Ambassadors; Sam Ruddock (2012 Paralympic sprinter), with both Sam and Matt Hampson (Ex-Leicester Tigers & England U21’s rugby) supporting the Closing Ceremony.

Sporting Champion Tom Reed (GB Judo) will also be part of the Opening Ceremony, taking on our GO GOLD Ambassador Isaac Gagin in a Judo demonstration. The Ceremony will also see a performance from the winner of the recent ‘Leicester-Shire & Rutland’s GOT Talent Competition.

As the national award winners for the management and delivery of an exceptionally high-quality 2012/13 Sainsbury’s School Games Programme, the Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Local Organising Committee (LOC) won the right to run a competition to design the National Sainsbury’s School Games Mascot!

Ellen Blaine, from Leicester Grammar School, won the competition with her design of ‘SEDRIC the Lion’. The Championships will be SEDRIC’s first public appearance before he sets off on a tour of School Games Championships across the country!
